On Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns 115-114 with a dramatic comeback led by Victor Wembanyama. Phoenix surged into a 20-point lead early in the third quarter, leaving San Antonio looking like it was destined for another heavy defeat after a brutal 40-point beating by the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. In the fourth quarter, San Antonio turned a thrilling duel in Phoenix on its head by outscoring the Suns 33-19.
A jump shot from 15 feet by French prodigy Wembanyama, the No.1 NBA Draft pick, prompted the comeback. It was a three-point game with 49 seconds left when Wembanyama, a 7ft 4in (2.24m) tall teenager, tipped in a dunk with seven seconds left to make it a one-point game.
However, Keldon Johnson’s decisive play with only seconds left was when he wrestled the ball away from Durant, drove to the basket, and made a layup to give San Antonio its first lead of the game. The San Antonio team celebrated its first road win of the season after Durant attempted a buzzer-beater, but his attempt was missed.
